FUNSHEETS

Based on the storybook, the 135 Funsheets encourage children to appreciate, respect and conserve wildlife and cultures while developing essential skills through games, activities, creative exercises and meaningful verses.

AGE APPROPRIATENESS

Our wide range of themes can be enjoyed by seven-year-olds through to interested seventy-seven-year-olds. However, Africa is not for ‘sissies’ and there are predators and prey, as every animal has a role to play and families to feed. This may be unsettling for sensitive children. Parents, guardians and
educators are therefore encouraged
to review the Funsheets beforehand
and use their own discretion.

Some activities require adult
assistance or supervision
,
particularly hands-on projects such
as making playdough, crafting with tools
and outdoor exploration.

About

Family Matters

Dawn Woods is a retired Kindergarten teacher with more than 14 years of experience teaching Grades 1 to 3, specializing in the Infant School Method, which emphasizes play-based, child-centered learning, nurturing cognitive, social, and emotional development through natural curiosity, sensory play, dramatic activities and games. She qualified from the internationally recognized Grahamstown Training College in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Dawn has a lifelong passion for nature and conservation. As a child and subsequently as a mother, she cherished time outdoors with her family.

For 21 years, she frequently hiked in South Africa’s magnificent mountains and joined many outings as a member of the Archaeological and Astronomy Societies, the South African Bird Club.

She volunteered in the Entomology Department at the Cape Town Iziko Museum and The Animal Demography Unit (formerly the Avian Demography Unit) specialising in Blue Crane Counts through the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Cape Town.

She is passionate about indigenous and balanced conservation practices that respect life and natural habitats without taking conservation to extremes.

Her late daughter, Robyn, was a Conservation Officer for SANParks (South African National Parks) and Dawn spent invaluable time with her with her during her time living and working in various South African Reserves, gaining firsthand experiences that contributed to the stories and themes of the program.

Her daughter, Nicola, inherited Dawn’s creativity and built a successful career as a Graphic Designer. Drawing on her professional expertise, Nicola transformed Dawn’s layouts, ideas, photographs and artworks into the final digital, print-ready files.

Dawn’s precious granddaughters, Jenna & Chloe have been a constant source of inspiration and have added their input into Animals4Africa.

The events described in Animals4Africa Safari are based on Dawn’s personal experiences, with the exception of the Magic Carpet, which was included to inspire imagination and adventure.

The program was created with the hope of helping to protect Southern Africa’s amazing and increasingly threatened wildlife, ensuring that future generations—including their children and grandchildren—will have the opportunity to admire and enjoy.

SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees
From the 26th to 28th June 2026, we were honoured to exhibit in the Walk on the Wildside marquee at the SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees. It was an incredible experience and a wonderful opportunity to connect with children, families, and like-minded conservation and publishing organisations. We are grateful to the organisers and everyone who visited our exhibit and helped make the event such a memorable success.
